Ask The Expert: Kitchen Fitting Process

28 November 2025

We understand that planning a new kitchen is a big investment – both in time and money. While choosing the style, layout, and finishes is exciting, the actual fitting process can often feel like the most overwhelming part. It’s not just about installing cabinets and appliances; it’s about coordinating trades, managing timelines, and making sure everything runs smoothly in your home.

In this blog, we answer some of the most common queries about kitchen installations – from how long it takes to how you can make the process as stress-free as possible. Whether you’re at the very start of your renovation journey or preparing for the fitting to begin, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Ask The Expert

Meet Douglas

We sat down with Douglas, one of our most experienced kitchen fitters here at The Kitchen Depot, to answer some of the most common questions homeowners ask when planning a new kitchen. With over 20 years on the job, Douglas has seen it all – and shares his practical advice for a smooth and successful installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Douglas: Functionality. It’s easy to get caught up in finishes and colours, but the layout has to work for how you live. Think about how you cook, how often you entertain, and how much storage you need. The design should make life easier, not just look good.

Douglas: Yes, 100%. It makes the job quicker and safer for everyone. Clear out all cupboards and drawers, and remove anything on the worktops. If you can, set up a temporary kitchen space elsewhere – just a kettle and microwave can go a long way.

Douglas: Usually between 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the size of the kitchen and whether it includes things like moving plumbing or electrics. If we’re knocking down walls or fitting custom pieces, it might take a bit longer – but we always aim to keep disruption to a minimum.

What does the typical installation process look like?

Douglas: The process of installing a kitchen may vary slightly depending on the fitter, but the general order of work remains pretty consistent. Ultimately, it’s the final result that matters most.

Your design will walk this through with you during your appointment if you have chosen one of our fitters. If you have chosen a supply only option, please get in touch with your external fitter who can go over the details with you.

Douglas: Good communication makes a big difference. If there’s anything unusual about your space – like uneven floors, old wiring, or access issues then let us know in advance. It’s also helpful to be available (or have someone who is) during key moments of the installation in case we need quick decisions. And finally, a clear workspace helps us work safely and efficiently – so if you can, keep the area free from pets and little ones while we’re fitting.

Douglas: The reveal. I love seeing the customer’s face when it all comes together. A new kitchen really transforms a home – it’s not just where people cook, it’s where they live. Knowing I had a hand in that is a great feeling.

Douglas: Thanks for taking the time to read some of our most frequently asked questions regarding the installation process. We hope to see you soon on your kitchen journey!
